The pipe organ in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris has pipes in it that date back to the Middle Ages. The recording was made in April of 2010 by the noted sound engineer Christoph Frommen and features the brilliant organist, Johann Vexo. Johann is the organist of the Choir Organ and is one of the five organists at the cathedral. He was granted this position in 2004 and teaches organ at the Conservatoire National de Region de Angers. The compositions on the recording span from the 19th- to the 21st-century and show off the colors of this great pipe organ. In total, eight microphones were used, six hung from a cable in the nave and two in the transepts. Johann plays organ works by Duruflé and Franck. He also plays Franz Liszt's "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam" and Thierry Escaich's "Trio Poemes for grand orgue". The booklet has notes by Stephen Tharp both in French and English. It also contains many photographs from the recording sessions as well as the exterior of this beautiful cathedral. The sound is very true, clear, and balanced with plenty of ambiance and the playing is breathtaking.
There still are a limited number of CDs available for this title. This recording can be immediately downloaded from iTunes. You have the option to download this recording as a 16-bit WAVE file from Abeille Music in France.
