Description

Tom Winpenny plays the Harrison & Harrison pipe organ at St. Albans Cathedral, where he is the Assistant Master of the Music. Ralph Downes was the consultant for this pipe organ and, with Peter Hurford, designed the pipe organ. The installation of the pipe organ began in 1962 after Easter and it was dedicated on November 18th of that year. The organ was renovated again in 2007. Tom Winpenny begins this disc with his own transcription of Sir William Walton’s “March: A History of the English-Speaking Peoples,” as well as playing works by Bach, Handel, Vierne and Willan. The disc is also the premiere recording of Patrick Gowners’ “Trio Sonata,” Peter Hurford’s “Two Dialogues” and Simon Preston’s “Toccata.” This recording comes with extensive documentation: notes on the music, stoplist and numerous photos.
