Description

Michael T. C. Hey serves as Associate Director of Music and Organist at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. He recently won first prize in the Shanghai Conservatory First International Organ Competition. He is an international concert organist who is represented in North America exclusively by Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, LLC.

This is his first CD recording made on the Great Organ of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. The music recorded on the CD represents a wide range of musical compositional styles and includes a premier recording. The disc fully demonstrates both the artist’s formidable technique and musicianship. The colors and wide dynamic range of the pipe organ at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York shines through. This is an organ CD you need to buy.

Works by Sigfrid Karg-Elert show off some of the most mysterious string colors of the organ at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Max Reger’s massive Chorale Fantasia and a transcription of a Wagner Overture demonstrate the pipe organ’s controlled bombast and thunderous but refined power. One of Michael T. C. Hey’s Julliard School classmates wrote a new work on the 30th Psalm. Ryan Dodge describes his work as “a tongue-in-cheek work that strives to assimilate and synthesize the many stylistic resources available to the modern listener. Though its most apparent influence is that of 1930’s big band and bebop Jazz, subtle traces of Afro-Cuban folk music, rock guitar solos, and funk bass lines can be heard, all of which is passed through the lens of modern atonal composition.” The disc is full of one winning interpretation after another.

The booklet comes with a full stop list of the organ at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, a short history of the pipe organ at the cathedral, program notes and beautiful photography.

Joe Vitacco and Michael T. C. Hey would like to thank the Peragallo Pipe Organ Company for being part of the team to make this an excellent recording. John Peragallo IV, you went above and beyond to assist with this project.
